Thakur Suraj Pratap sees Pooja at a temple and marries her. Her brother Raju comes into the household with her and makes himself useful there, and in time he and the Thakur's sister Jyoti grow close.

Years pass without a child. The Thakur takes a courtesan, Vaishali, as his second wife, which unsettles the house and puts distance between Raju and Jyoti.

Vaishali's brother Gajendra follows her in, wanting Jyoti and the share of the estate that marrying her would bring. Vaishali, settled now in her new life, refuses to help him.
