Thakur Bhanu Pratap Singh rules his family the way he rules his village, and he has never forgiven his youngest son Heera for being unable to read. When Heera marries Radha against his father's wishes, he is cut off entirely.

Heera leaves with nothing and builds a life on his own: a transport business first, then a hospital, and a standing in the district that his father cannot ignore. His own son, meanwhile, quietly befriends the grandfather who disowned them.

The distance between father and son is closing when a rival zamindar sees his chance, poisons the old man, and leaves Heera to take the blame. Amitabh Bachchan plays both father and son.
