Vikram is a schoolboy in a small town, quietly devoted to his neighbour and unable to say so out loud. He runs errands for her and writes a letter he never manages to deliver, while her father keeps a close watch on the house.

Years later he is at college, loud and unbothered, coasting through terms with his two closest friends. A new lecturer, Sithara, arrives and is mistaken for a student on her first day, which begins badly for everyone.

What starts as needling settles into something else, as Vikram finds himself competing for her attention with men who have more to offer, and behaving, for the first time, like someone with a plan.
