Surya plays football and spends most of his energy on Vaishali, a medical student in Kolkata's Telugu community who wants none of it. She gives in eventually, and then says the word marriage.

Surya, who grew up watching his own parents fail at it, ends things rather than explain himself. Before they separate they fix a place and a date to meet again: Kathmandu, one year on.

He keeps the appointment. The ground gives way under the city that week, and when he finds Vaishali she has lost the year that mattered and is carefully hiding that fact from everyone but him.
