Erra Srinu makes his living by stealing. A situation he never planned for leaves him dressed as a holy man, and the name that comes with the robes, Sri Krishnananda Swamy, stays on him.

The disguise turns out to pay better than the thieving did. Followers gather, and the people standing closest to the new swami work out how much his reputation is worth to them.

Srinu also falls in love with Vasudha, which is awkward for a man everyone believes has renounced the world. Then Chaitanya, a rationalist with no patience for godmen, sets out to take the swami apart in public.
