Kesu loves Sudha, a girl from his own village. When a gold bangle of hers slips into the lake, he promises her another one in its place.

Sudha's parents have other plans and marry her to a wealthy man in the city. Kesu sells his land to pay for the bangle, then reaches the city to find the wedding already done.

Years on he is an old man begging in the village, still carrying a bangle he has never been able to hand over. A boy called Gopi takes an interest in him, and in the promise he has been keeping to himself all this while.
