Marudheeran is raised by Vembunathan, chief of a village that lives in fear of the Vedhalams, soldiers who come out of the forest and take people away. He has grown strong enough to fight them off, and he marries Pavalamalli quietly.

The raiders come back. Vembunathan is killed, Pavalamalli is carried away to the kingdom of Vedhalapuram, and Marudheeran walks in after her.

Inside the city he saves Princess Manthagini, earns the favour of Queen Yavanarani, and finds himself promised to a bride he never came for. He also finds that his own blood ties him to this place far more closely than he knew.
